1940-2015

Kathleen Sarna

Kathleen Sarna was born July 30, 1940, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She was the fourth child of Joseph and Mary Strohm and joined older siblings Joe, Jane and Edward. A few years later, younger brother and sister, Frank and Lucille were born.
 
 When Kathy was only seven, her mother died of tuberculosis. Working full time, this forced her father to send the two youngest children to live with relatives on Long Island. Kathy stayed at home and was taken care of by her older sister, Jane.  A few years later, tragedy struck again when her father was killed in a workplace accident. With no parents, the remaining Strohm siblings were placed with various family members. Kathy was brought up by and lived with loving relatives until she married her husband, Richard Sarna.
 
As the years passed, Kathy’s relationship with her siblings drifted. Then, within the span of  a year and a half, all three sisters were diagnosed with breast cancer. Fighting this disease was a terrible new challenge but it brought the family back together like never before. The Three Strohm Sisters, who had endured so much heartache in the past, supported each other and eventually beat breast cancer. Surviving that experience, the three sisters realized that they needed to do more. Thus, the Three Strohm Sisters Foundation was born in 1999 and fundraising for cancer research became their cause. Since it’s inception, the foundation has raised close to two million dollars to fund cutting edge research.
 
With such a difficult start in life, it would have been easy for her to be bitter. Kathy’s life was inspirational because with her sisters, she turned heartache into hope.  Through the Three Strohm Sisters Foundation, the family came together and brought others together on their mission to cure cancer. They found that, although, you make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give.
 
 Kathy passed away on March 15, 2015, after a prolonged struggle with a brain tumor. Most people, who knew Kathy, remember her constantly being busy. She was busy working in advertising as well as being a wife, mother, grandmother and running a successful charitable foundation. If there was any way to work out a deal with a customer, vendor, caterer or anyone, Kathy would find it. She was outspoken, tenacious and driven but also had a huge heart when it came to family, friends or the less fortunate. She was, indeed, the heart of the Three Strohm Sisters Family Foundation.

Lucille Montrony

Lucille Montrony was born January 15, 1945, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She was the youngest child of Joseph and Mary Strohm and joined older siblings Joe, Jane, Edward, Kathy and Frank .
 
When Lucille was only two, her mother died of tuberculosis. Working full time, this forced her father to send her and Frank to live with relatives on Long Island.   A few years later, tragedy struck again when her father was killed in a workplace accident. With no parents, the remaining Strohm siblings were placed with various family members. Lucille was brought up by and lived with loving relatives until she married her husband, John Montrony.
 
As the years passed, Lucille’s relationship with her siblings drifted. Then, within the span of  a year and a half, all three sisters were diagnosed with breast cancer. Lucille passed away on January 4, 2013, after a valiant battle with peritoneal cancer. She loved her job as a school crossing guard and knew every single child’s name she crossed as well as their parent’s names. She loved the slot machines of Atlantic City and Las Vegas and was a devoted wife and mother. She was the irreverent sister, who always had a witty remark handy. She was, truly, the spark of the Three Strohm Sisters Family Foundation.

Jane Stanczuk

 Jane Stanczuk was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She was the second child of Joseph and Mary Strohm and joined older sibling Joe. She was followed by Edward, Kathy, Frank and Lucille.  

When Jane was eleven, her mother died of tuberculosis. Working full time, this forced her father to send the two youngest children to live with relatives on Long Island. Kathy stayed at home and was taken care of by her older sister, Jane.  A few years later, when Jane was finishing high school, tragedy struck again when her father was killed in a workplace accident. With no parents, the remaining Strohm siblings were placed with various family members. Soon after, Jane married her husband, Henry Stanczuk.

Though in her eighties, and joined by the next generation of her family, Jane continues to make our world a happier, healthier place by helping to find a cure. To all who know her, she is a warm and welcoming presence who is always willing to help those less fortunate. Retired from a long career in banking, Jane is an adored mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and family matriarch.  She is the life of the Three Strohm Sisters Family Foundation.
